Name/format change coming for 106.9 The Bear?

UPDATE (March 31:
The station re-launched this morning at 11:00am as Jump! 106.9.  (Official press release here.) First song on the air was "Animals" by Martin Garrix. Here's a promo photo that the station sent us, showing their on-air hosts: left to right, Jay Hat (mornings), Jenna Mo, Mr. D., Amy Volume, The Saint, Hey Ray).

Here's one of their promotional vehicles:

Why "Jump" and not "Fresh"?  It might have something to do with the nuances of this.

UPDATE (March 30):
Maybe the station won't be "Fresh" afterall?
There's a new Twitter account (@jumpottawa, bio: "Ottawa's Non Stop Hits 106.9 JUMP FM: JT, Rihanna, Jason Derulo, Beyonce, Katy Perry and more" and there is also @jump1069) and a blank web site that belongs to Corus (jumpottawa.com and jumpottawa.ca were both registered on March 4, just two days before The Bear went off the air.)
(via RadioInsight)

The new format is expected to launch Monday, March 31 at 11am.  Jump is a new brand for Corus -- at least, they don't have any stations with the same name in any other Canadian market.

UPDATE (March 7):
I've heard Monday, March 31 as the launch date for the new station format. The day before April Fools.

UPDATE (March 6):
Corus has finally tranquilized The Bear.  As of today, the station continues to play rock music but the station's old identity has been erased. When I listended earlier today, I heard two messages between songs.  In one, a male announcer simply stated the station frequency: "106.9fm".  In another, he said, "Something fresh, shiny and new is coming."

Here's a message posted to the Bear's web site today from Mark Dickie, the station's general manager:

As of Thursday evening, there is no site active at http://www.1069freshfm.com/, and no changes that I can see or hear at sister station Boom 99.7.

Additional reports here from The Ottawa Sun and Ottawa Citizen (paywall).
The Citizen reported: "A Corus spokesman said Thursday the new station will debut later this month. Until then The Bear will stay on the air playing only music and ads. In an interview, general manager Mark Dickie said some announcers were let go as part of the change. 'Unfortunately we had to say goodbye to a few really good broadcasters who have been part of the radio station for many years, some of them a very long time, so it’s a sad day in that respect,' he said. 'At the same time, (remaining staff) knows what the future holds, and where we’re going, and there’s a sense of excitement about that.'"

Milkman Unlimited: "With the changes, on air hosts Scott Lear, Jay Herrington and Jon "Gonzo" Mark are no longer with the station."

Milkman Unlimited: "Longtime Director of Regional Sales, Darryl MacArthur parts with Corus after 24 years with the Ottawa Stations."

UPDATE (January 25):
I did a web search for "The Bear 99.7fm", and realized that in Pembroke, the Bear currently rebroadcasts at 99.7fm.  In Ottawa, 99.7 fm is Boom.

Perhaps the plan is to move The Bear over to 99.7 for Ottawa and Pembroke, and change 106.9fm over to Fresh fm.

In other words, The Bear remains as a brand, but moves down the dial to 99.7fm.  Boom moves up to 106.9fm and changes its name to Fresh.  (A similar switcheroo happened a few years ago when CKBY moved from 105.3 to 101.1, making way for Kiss FM.)

Stay tuned!

A radio insider in Ottawa has kindly corrected me on the above information:

  • The Pembroke repeater moved to 99.9fm when 99.7 launched a few years ago in Ottawa. (To prevent interference on the signal.)
  • By law, 99.9 in Pembroke has to broadcast whatever is on 106.9fm.

Could there be a format change in the future for 106.9 The Bear?

Here's an article in the Ottawa Busines Journal today: The CRTC has approved the sale of two Ottawa radio stations to Toronto-based Corus Entertainment in a deal worth almost $16 million.  The two stations invovled are 106.9 The Bear and Boom 99.7.

Other than a brief stint from 2009-2011 when the station was known as "Virgin Radio", CKQB has been operating as "The Bear" since it signed on the air way back on September 1, 1994.

There's currently a blank web site active at 1069freshfm.com. The title of the page includes the call letters "CKQB" along with the Fresh name. Here's a screen shot:

The site has a Corus logo at the bottom and the web site (registered today) is hosted on Corus servers:

Corus also operates Fresh FM brand stations in Edmonton, Winnipeg, Hamilton, and London. "A mix of pop and rock from the 90's through today. The music of Fresh FM is familiar and fun with artists such as Justin Timberlake, Bon Jovi, Katy Perry, Bruno Mars, Kelly Clarkson and Adele."

The Bear was ranked 10th among Ottawa radio stations in the Fall 2013 ratings.

  1. we at https://www.facebook.com/BETTERROCKSTATIONOTTAWA are very interested in this and what lies ahead with the new name change and if it will go all pop or stay has a Rock format. we obviously would rather see the new station stay in the Rock genre. it would be even more awesome if they utilized the name "FRESH" and bring in more todays Rock and less tragically Hip and Nickleback that the Bear soo heavily favored in the past. there is a HUGE amount of Rock bands that are trending in the U.S. and Europe that we don't get to hear here. let hope the crack in the door that the Bear had for new music kicks wide open!!!

    1. This is more what i was hoping for to would of bin sweet!!!!!!!!

  2. It'll be up here with whatever details are available whenever it happens: http://www.milkmanunlimited.com/tunedin.htm

  6. I was super pissed today when I tuned in to 106.9 and heard the same garbage pop. Do we really need ANOTHER station that plays top 40 garbage? Hot 89.9 and others do that already. Thank you for taking away the one station that played good music from the 90's. Good Canadian rock content among others. When The Bear was reintroduced after it was Virgin radio, it was amazing. And now it's gone again. I will be removing the preset from my car radio now. Thanks.

    1. Are you slow? Its just a joke, your precious metal will be back tomorrow.

  7. this sucks we fought so hard to keep the bear like W.T.F

  8. ya, this is just another shit station playing the garbage nobody wants to buy on ITunes.. its probly still owned by virgin (remember when 106.9 was virgin radio?) so yea, that explains why its such a pile of shit now.... what we need in this city is another 54 rock or ACTUAL classic rock station.. not "new music from old bands".. actual MUSIC recorded pre 80.. this jump shit sucks balls...

You've got to be kidding me.. I'm 20 and I was born and raised with The Bear blasting in my ears!! YOU CAN'T TAKE THE BEST ROCK STATION FROM US. My father and I are as heartbroken as could be. I can't comprehend why they would change an incredible station - with unbelievable hosts - to yet ANOTHER crap music station.

  12. Anonymous7:44 PM

Like we needed another spin off of kiss fm or hot 89 ....What a fn joke !!! Thumbs up to Chez106 still going strong!!! Hey 106.9 you call yourself Jump FM make sure its off a cliff!!! .losers

I have been listening since the station was 54 rock and I still have that sweater, keeping it as a souvenir. it was great when they moved from AM to FM in the early 90,s. I' m 46 and I will always listen to rock. I will always have the nicest memory of my daughter when she was 3 years old doing the expression of " 106.9 THE BEAR RRRAWRRRR!!!!! can't believe it's gone again. Estie de tabarnaque de calice...............Just one more pist off listener.

Pure garbage, the last rock station is ottawa is dead, what a shame.
Thanks bell, corus and Mark Dickie for terminating the last bastion of good music and adding another crappy station to the airways.

  18. Anonymous11:59 AM

Wow what garbage. Removed from pre-set. Sad times for Ottawa radio

  19. Anonymous8:34 PM

This is ridiculous! Bring back the Bear, who ever thought that this was a good idea obviously has something wrong with them. These days people can't leave good things alone they always half to be tampering and it never turns out good, Like come on seriously do you actually think that this is going to work, Just another stupid station for flamers to listen to! If read all of the posts it is quite obvious that this new station isn't wanted and The Bear is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  20. Anonymous11:27 PM

    The official statement was
"We are confident the new format will be a welcome addition to the Ottawa radio landscape. Your support is important to us and we invite you to listen to the station that we are certain will become an audience favorite."
You are wrong to be confident. The new format is not welcome. Our support is gone. The new format will fail. You should fire the 'marketing genius' who made this happen.

  21. Anonymous11:37 PM

I'd rather Jump to 105.7, all static, all the time. Easier on the ears.

    1. Anonymous10:37 AM

105.7 is K ROCK in Kingston, thank god i can get it here!

  22. Anonymous9:45 AM

This is the ruin of a class of rock you suck bad
